Embrace your otherside
We all have a part of us we try to hideaway. It is like default you. No matter how much I mute and cover it up, it always comes back into the spotlight like one’s singleness and unemployment at a family dinner table. God bless women.
That part you try to banish isn’t going anywhere, think of it like Bruce Banner and the Incredible Hulk, Naruto and the nine tails, And like them, it isn’t about getting rid of the other but gaining an understanding of that other side of you. It’s useful and has a purpose. My other side procrastinates on procrastinating, I know that doesn’t make sense but trust me it does. After having a chain of productive days fighting it off I immediately relapse into an intense session of thinking about the things I should be doing while calming myself with “I can always do it tomorrow”. I always fought this and thought this isn’t me. There’s no way. But it is me and the more I ignored it the stronger it fought back, basically like chasing a crush or money. So I spent time with it trying to get to know this laidback side of me that doesn’t want to do much but just cruise through life.
After a while, I realized that this relaxed side of me had a purpose and was as important as the do-everything except become president side of me. So I deliberately gave it attention, took time off between sessions of focus to just do fun stuff, and found that after striking a balance they complimented each other. My best ideas come to me when I’m doing nothing but cruising through life but I need my focused hard-working side to put them down and clear them up.
We all have parts of ourselves that we think are disadvantages, but I think after a bit of understanding and knowing when those parts are useful and some form of harmony can be achieved.
