Work life balance is a myth

Everyone talks about a work-life balance like there is an even division in time and energy between the two. It is unevenly balanced for most people, leaning towards the extremes at most times. Trying to strike a balance is extremely difficult. You never have enough time for work or you just never spend enough time on life stuff, like building miniature ships.

But why look for a balance in the first place? Most of us look for a balance because we feel our lives are being taken over by one or the other. Instead of asking what is important at this moment, right now. What am I trying to achieve? Don’t stop there though, Why not go a little deeper with this, and ask yourself not only what is important now but also does it match with the person I want to look back on and be proud of?

We all have an idealistic view of who we want to be, why not use that as our North Star to navigate through the currents of life? Striking is not a balance but a flow. A flow towards the person you envision. Asking what takes precedence in my journey to becoming the person I want to be now. No longer asking if I should work on Saturday but instead asking, do I want to be a good friend or do I want to be more independent financially. The point is to be conscious and deliberate about where you are taking your ship. This is in no way a perfect way to steer through life but just another tool to add to your tool box.

Look not for a balance but a direction to flow(sail). Let every decision lead you closer to an ideal you, an ideal life tailored by your decisions, mostly.
